New Music: T-Boz, Prince, Nicole Scherzinger

Several new tracks are creating buzz today.  First up is new material from former TLC member Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins.

Using her signature throaty  vocals, T-Boz provides empowerment and encouragement in the ballad “Champion.”  Beginning with dramatic thunder claps, the ballad likely speaks to T-Boz’s health struggles.  The singer/rapper has been a long-time sufferer of sickle-cell. Proceeds from “Champion” will benefit sickle cell and leukemia foundations.

T-Boz also recently made another exciting announcement. Apparently, 2013 is the year for R&B girl groups to reunite.  T-Boz has also announced a long-awaited TLC reunion, minus Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes who died tragically in a car crash in 2002.

Remaining members T-Boz and Chili will “do two new songs and remix some of the older hits,” she told Anderson Cooper on his daytime show. “Use it as a twenty-year anniversary. Twenty years, two decades.”

Prince is also attempting a comeback, using a bizarre marketing strategy to leak new song “Screwdriver.” The musician, notoriously opposed to social media and unauthorized tracks, reportedly let his new background band, 3rdEyeGirl, leak the track on their YouTube account,  before posting it to his own site.

“Screwdriver,” is likely to please Prince fans with its vintage sound, but the  production is so stuck in the 1980s it won’t fare well on radio.  Prince’s sound hasn’t really evolved since the Reagan administration.

Finally, we got a peak of the “Boomerang” video from Nicole Scherzinger. The former Pussycat doll and X Factor judge gave a preview of the first single off her upcoming second album. Featuring a black and white video, the upbeat song will likely follow the success of her solo debut Killer Love.

The full video for “Boomerang” will debut January 24 on VEVO.
