It’s been announced through Deadline that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will make his next film the heavily anticipated Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, the cool-guy-noir-comic-book movie from directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Johnny, a starring role originally offered to the always eccentrically interesting Johnny Depp. Apparently, Depp has chosen to take his Keith Richards impressions and quirkiness to another project, allowing the always hirable Joseph Gordon-Levitt a piece of the limelight.
Gordon-Levitt’s character is one of the core characters in the overlapping story lines that will feature returning characters like Mickey Rourke’s Marv, Clive Owen’s Dwight, Bruce Willis’s John Hardigan and Jessica Alba’s Nancy Callahan. There’s already been a mishmash of casting and it’s no surprise that Gordon-Levitt has been brought in on such short notice. Whether or not the film will be a sequel or prequel has yet to be divulged to the press.
In any case, the addition of Joseph Gordon-Levitt to an already stellar cast should help Rodriguez and Miller reconcile the fact that they could not keep the elusive Johnny Depp. With the year Gordon-Levitt has had — he’s starred in four movies altogether while directing his own — it’s obvious he is and has been gaining quite a hefty amount of momentum. He even has a bit of experience in leading a noir film from his work in the often forgotten cult classic, Brick.
Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has already started shooting but isn’t set to hit theaters until October 4th. That leaves plenty of time for Rodriguez and Miller to once again work their magic in front of the green screen. We’ll be sure to keep you updated.
