Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton is finally pregnant, but is currently in the hospital after suffering from a rare but severe form of morning sickness that is often a sign of twins.
The Duchess’s pregnancy has ben one of the most anticipated pregnancies since Princess Diana’s pregnancy back in 1981.
While people all over the world are celebrating the news – causing #Royalbaby to be one of the global trending topics – the soon-to-be mom has been admitted to a London hospital due to the severity of her morning sickness.
The palace released a statement revealing that Kate has been diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum which is a form of morning sickness where the mother-to-be becomes severely dehydrated and needs supplementary nutrients.
“It’s not unusual for pregnant women to get morning sickness, but when it gets to the point where you’re dehydrated, losing weight or vomiting so much you begin to build up (toxic) products in your blood, that’s a concern,” explained Dr. Kecia Gaither, director of maternal fetal medicine at Brookdale University and Medical Center in New York.
The condition only affects about one out of every 50 women and it is rare that the woman actually has to be hospitalized. The good news, however, is that Kate is expected to be just fine and make a full recovery.
In fact, according to medical experts the illness is often associated with mother’s expecting twins, which means the royal family might be welcoming two new royal babies to the family.
Even more exciting news? Will and Kate’s child regardless of his or her gender, will one day become heir to the British throne. No word yet on how the matter will be addressed if Middleton really does give birth to twin babies.
Although the legislation has not been finalized, changes are being made to allow the first born child to be next in line for the throne regardless of if they are a boy or a girl.
William is currently at his wife’s side and is likely to stay there until his wife is in much better condition.
“As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter,” the palace added in their statement.
Despite the Duchess battling morning sickness, the palace also made sure they pointed out just how excited they were to hear the news of a baby on the way.
“Their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby,” the palace continued. “The Queen , The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.”
Even British Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his excitement about the news.
“It’s absolutely wonderful news and I’m sure everyone around the country will be celebrating with them tonight,” he told BBC. “I was handed a note in a meeting. And I have to say, it was difficult to keep it a secret.”
Will and Kate’s child will be the Queen’s third great-grandchild.
Prince William is doing his best to adapt to the lack of privacy that the pregnancy announcement is already causing, especially after tabloids snapped photos of his wife topless during their private vacation.
The Duke and Duchess held off on having children longer than what is normal for royal couples. While more Royal children are born less than a year after their parents tie the knot, it has been over a year since Prince William and Kate got married back in April of 2011.
