R.Kelly Says “Trapped in the Closet” Broadway Bound

After seven years, R.Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” may be headed to Broadway, according to the R&B singer. Kelly revealed on Monday that he had received an offer to bring the video soap opera to the stage. New York City’s Sunshine Theater was packed for the premiere of Trapped in the Closet: The Next Installment, where R.Kelly told the crowd of his plans for the long running series.

“To transform it into a Broadway version, that’s what I’m working on,” he told an excited audience. “I’m just having a lot of fun. I don’t have a job, so I sit in the studio all day and think of stuff to do and this is just something stupid I’ve done that’s been successful for me,” he said. “I’m having a lot of fun with it.”

When asked if he would star in a theater production of Trapped in the Closet, Kelly told E! correspondent Alicia Quarles that he would make appearances in at least some of the cities. I can’t guarantee all of them, and that’s what’s being negotiated right now because it takes a lot of time to do these chapters—I’m the only one in the studio writing these chapters,” he said.

Trapped in the Closet The Next Installment will be comprised of a total of 18 new chapters, beginning with Chapter 23. IFC hosted the premiere event, and will air the new episodes for the masses on Friday night. While The Next Installment are the first episodes to be released since 2007, Kelly promised fans that he has many more in store.

“I want everybody to know I’ve got 85 chapters of `Trapped in the Closet’ waiting in the studio for y’all,” he said on Monday. “The chapters that are coming – the show, we call it – is going to exceed every chapter that you have ever seen.”
