New App, Plug-In Allow iPad, iPhone to Show Live Broadcast TV Without Internet

Some app developers are content to make use of the iPad as a companion device for your television viewing experience, but then there’s Elgato—the company behind a new accessory called EyeTV Mobile. Elgato thinks the iPad and the iPhone can do more than supplement whatever you’re viewing on your 50-inch flat screen, and so they’re bringing free broadcast content right to your tablet through the use of one inexpensive plug-in.

The company behind EyeTV makes one simple claim: “Real live TV. Without Internet.” The idea is basic, but it bears a lot of weight if it catches on. And why shouldn’t it catch on? To use EyeTV, all you have to do is drop about a hundred bucks for the actual TV tuner adapter and then download the free app for your iOS device. From there, you’ll be able to watch channels like Fox, NBC, and Telemundo— provided you’re physically located in or around a place like New York City, which is part of the current Dyle Coverage Map.

Of course, the great thing about watching TV through use of an antenna accessory is the fact that it spares all data usage. There have been TV viewing options available in the App Store for some time, but perhaps none that provide this clean of a workaround at such a low flat fee.
