At last! After the stellar teaser that was released a few months ago, and some scattered TV spots, we finally have a full trailer for Les Misérables! Tom Hooper’s film, based on the famed musical (based on the classic novel) is drawing ever closer, and it’s probably my most anticipated movie of the rest of 2012. It stars Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, and many more. And almost all of them get the chance to show off their pipes here.
Some have voiced concern that Crowe might not measure up, and I won’t make any judgments based on the five seconds or so we hear of him in this video. The point isn’t to showcase the actors themselves, but to show the songs. It’s a siren call to everyone who loves the musical (such as myself). “Castle on a Cloud!” “Look Down!” “I Dreamed a Dream!” “ONE DAY MORE!” “DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING!!!” It’s enough to make the skin explode from the goosebumps!
Only one thing causes me concern: people talk normally in this trailer. People don’t really talk in Les Misérables. It’s sung through, like an opera in English. How much normal speak is in this movie? Not much too much, I hope. Also, I wish that Helena Bonham Carter as Mme. Thernardier didn’t look like she stepped off one of her husband’s film sets (it’s pretty over-the-top compared to the rest of the design), but ah well, she’s got her “thing.”
Check out the trailer below. Les Misérables will be released this Christmas.
