Lena Dunham Discusses Her First Time…Voting

Lena Dunham stars in a brand new commercial endorsing President Barack Obama and encouraging young people to rock the vote. In this tongue-in-cheek ad seen on The Wrap, Lena implores viewers to think carefully about to vote for, she states “Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy … Someone who really cares about and understands women.” She reflects on her first time voting by saying “It was this line in the sand. Before I was a girl, now I was a woman.” The one minute ad is choc full of innuendoes sure to make even the staunchest Republican crack a smile. Ok, that’s a stretch and right-wingers have already publicly spoken out against the commercial, but Lena’s ad is sure to make quite a few left leaners giggle.

Lena Dunham’s advertisement is extremely effective with young voters. She’s able to adequately portray the importance of voting, all whilst keeping the tone light and funny. Comparing your first time voting to losing your virginity seems absurd, however this comparison sends a deeper message about the importance of being properly educated and utilizing your vote wisely or facing possible negative repercussions. Additionally, voting is a special privilege denied to many and should be taken as seriously as some of life’s other milestones.

Dunham is the creator and star of HBO’s hit series Girls. Following in funny girl footsteps of Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, and Chelsea Handler, Dunham recently landed a book deal for 3.7 million dollars. It goes without saying that this talented young woman knows her stuff when it comes to awkward young adult life and her message will resonate with a large chunk of America’s youth.
