Zane Dishes on Her Creative Process for Writing Erotica

Although “50 Shades of Grey” has been getting a lot of attention, Zane is still the queen of erotica with 27 books and 2 movies under her belt. In an interview with Postscripted, she admitted that she didn’t read erotica prior to writing it.

“I didn’t even know I was writing it,” she admitted. “What I do is I write books and I happen to be very detailed with sexual acts as I am with everything else. That’s what erotica is for me.”

She also described what she looks for when she receives pitches from writers. According to Zane, she appreciates a good plot just as much as a good sex scene and so do her readers. “If you take the majority of the stories in all of the Flavor books written by others and all of my books, if you take all the sex scenes out and said ‘then they had sex’, it would still be a complete story. It would still be characters. It would still be a story line,” she continued. “My readers are really more into the storyline than they are into the sex.”

Zane’s books are commonly seen as urban fiction but she says her writing doesn’t target a particular group of people.

“I’ve never really tried to pull in a particular demographic. I just create books that I want to do,” she said.

Her most recent work was “Z-Rated: Chocolate Flava 3,” an anthology and she said the writers were a very diverse group of people. “In this book, I would say the writers are of a mixed culture. I have African American writers, white writers [and] Hispanic writers. I have some writers from Canada and I even have a couple from different countries. I just look for really hot stories,” she said with a chuckle.
