Atlanta Ranks #2 in U. S. in Affordable Housing

Metro Atlanta remains one of the most affordable places in America to buy a home, according to Bankrate’s Interest.com subsidiary.

The Big Peach is the No. 2 most affordable U.S. market with 40 percent of the area’s median income households exceeding the income necessary for a median priced home, which costs $103,200.

Atlanta’s housing market has become so affordable due in part to the big drop in home values during the Great Recession. According to the most recent monthly S&P/Case-Shiller home prices report, Atlanta home prices were below their January 2000 levels in July 2012.

Detroit, Atlanta and Minneapolis are the most affordable metros and San Diego, New York and San Francisco are the least affordable…
