After pulling its first trailer and moving back the release date in the wake of the Aurora, Co. tragedy, Warner Bros. is back with a new trailer for Gangster Squad.
Set in 1949 Los Angeles, Gangster Squad tells the true story of Mickey Cohen, a New York gangster who has the City of Angels in a death grip. Crime is rampant and Cohen has almost all of the politicians and cops on his payroll. In order to break Cohen’s control, a small group of LAPD officers throw away their badges and wage guerrilla warfare on the mob.
The star-studded cast includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, and Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen.
This new trailer boasts plenty of firepower. What’s most interesting about the footage is the mixture vintage L.A. (Mann’s Chinese Theater, Griffith Observatory) and current pop culture aesthetics (Jay-Z soundtrack). Writer Will Beall and director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) seem to have run the gamut of gangland history, from film noir to inner city street gangs.
