The latest promotion for the upcoming Disney film Wreck-It Ralph is sure to leave audiences craving a Tears for Fears cassette tape, a copy of The Breakfast Club and a pair of Wayfarers.
The new advertisement has all the essentials of the 1980s, including VHS tracking, sub-par audio, a fast-talking voice-over, and cheesy graphics. It’s obvious that Disney’s marketing team wishes to invoke the spirit that characterized the first video-game commercials and it’s equally obvious that they have succeeded.
Wreck-It Ralph will hit US theaters November 2. It’s set to star John C. Reilly as a video-game villain who’s sick of being the bad guy. Subsequently, he decides to flee his own game for more positive pastures, eventually reaching a ‘Halo’-like ‘Hero’s Duty’ and ‘Mario Kart’ emulating ‘Sugar Rush.’ Little does he know his absence has disastrous consequences for members of his own game.
Along with Reilly, the likes of Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Rachael Harris are set to voice various characters. Wreck-It Ralph will mark Disney’s fifth attempt of an animated feature without the aid of Pixar, and has so far not looked in any way disappointing.
