Michael Fassbender has been named as the latest star to join Terrence Malick’s third production in the space of the year, according to The Playlist.
Fassbender joins the likes of Ryan Gosling – who is slated to star – as well as Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Cate Blanchett in a yet to be titled film from the fabled director. The story is rumored to revolve around two intersecting love triangles (a love hexagon?) set in the Austin, Texas music scene. In Malick’s surreal and epic style, the film takes a look at obsession and betrayal.
While Malick’s execution is always under hot debate, his productivity should be accepted as anything but slouching. This new, untitled project will mark the third film Malick has put together this year. Since 2011’s Tree of Life, the director has released the romantic drama To the Wonder, wrapped up the universally philosophical film Voyage of Time (due out in 2013) and began post-production on Knight of Cups, yet another romantic drama. This is quite unusual for Malick, who usually allows more than five years to elapse between projects.
It only makes sense that Malick would choose an equally productive actor in Michael Fassbender. Since his breakout performances in 2006’s 300 and 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, Fassbender has appeared in six films released in 2011 and set to star in six more over 2013 alone. To call the actor and director an ideal match would be quite the understatement.
With so many reputable actors involved, it will be hard to keep this untitled project under wraps for long. Be sure to check back for more information, as we’ll be sure to grab it as it surfaces.
