It seems Eddie Murphy’s dream of turning Beverly Hills Cop into a TV series may soon become a reality. The comedian/actor is reportedly working with ‘The Shield’ creator Shawn Ryan to bring the popular police comedy to the small screen, according to a report by Vulture .
Almost a year ago, Murphy told Rolling Stone magazine that a fourth installment of the action comedy was unlikely, but he would be interested in creating a Beverly Hills Cop TV show.
Now it seems, the comedian has teamed up with Ryan and Sony Pictures Television to do a TV adaptation of the franchise which first appeared on screen in 1984. They reportedly have begun pitching it to networks since Tuesday.
Unamed source say that the pitch not only includes Eddie Murphy as the executive producer, but he would also have an on-camera role. If this is true, this will be the first time Murphy has returned to TV in a non-animated role since he was propelled into mega-stardom by his 1980-1984 stint on Saturday Night Live.
There are currently no in depth details on what the Beverly Hills Cop TV show would be about except that it will be an hour-long “buddy cop” series with comedic elements. Murphy did, however, tell Rolling Stone that he would bring back the foul-mouth, fast talking Axel Foley.
“What I’m trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley’s son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit … I’d do the pilot, show up here and there.”
