Apple Holding Separate Unveiling Events for iPhone 5, iPad Mini

Apple will hold two separate events to unveil its new iPhone and the iPad mini, according to a new report.

As previously reported, Apple will announce the iPhone 5, or whatever it chooses to call the new smartphone, on Sept. 12. But its smaller iPad mini will not make its debut until October, according to All Things D.

Citing “several sources,” ATD said the rumored iPad mini will hit store shelves after the iPhone 5 is safely in the hands of the Apple faithful.

The site did not provide an exact date for when Apple will hold the iPad mini event. Apple has not yet made any announcements, but in the past, ATD has been reliable when it comes to Apple event information.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber meanwhile, who is largely considered to be on top of all things Apple, speculated that Apple doesn’t want to release two highly anticipated gadgets at the same time.

“I don’t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time,” Gruber wrote. “Why share the spotlight? Why have another Apple product battling with the iPhone for the top spots in news coverage?”

As a result, Gruber said it “makes sense” for Apple to hold two events. “The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention — and it’s in Apple’s interest to keep that attention undiluted,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amazon is holding an event on Sept. 6, which is expected to include the debut of the new Kindle Fire tablet.
