Leading into the Toronto Film festival, a new Dredd trailer has hit the web. While the previous trailer left us slightly unimpressed with Lionsgate’s remake of the comic book hero, the 60 second clip shows the jury is still out on this one.
The story follows Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), who is part of an elite policing force that has been granted the powers of judge, jury and executioner in a drug infested, crime ridden metropolis called Mega City One. Dredd is tasked with evaluating an eager new recruit named Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), who possesses valuable psychic ability.
When they respond to a triple homicide at Peach Trees, a housing project under the oppressive control of Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), they find the epicenter of a new drug called Slo-Mo. In an attempt to shut down the production facility, the two judge find them selves locked in an all out war with heavily armed thugs who will stop at nothing to defend Ma-Ma and her vast drug empire.
You’re not crazy if you think this sounds a lot like the The Raid.
Unlike the first trailer, which only featured the fast moving shoot-em-up clips customary to action movies, the second preview digs deeper in the plot and the environment Dredd has to work in. Although there is only a small amount of new footage, we do see more of the stunning visuals that the film seems to possess and we get to hear Dredd utter his iconic catchphrase, “I AM THE LAW!”
We are still haunted by Sylvester Stallone’s debauchery of an attempt to bring John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip to the silver screen, but after seeing this more recent Dredd trailer, we’re cautiously optimistic. Watch the clip below and let us know what you think about the upcoming film.
