Microsoft Adds More Content Partners, Pushing to Make Xbox a Digital Entertainment Hub

Microsoft continues to add content partners for Xbox, pushing the game console into the center of the living room as more of a digital entertainment hub. The latest update, which goes live today, will bring a lot more news content online, with popular shows from NBC News.

The new app will include breaking news clips, as well as features and commentary from various NBC News shows. While it won’t have any full-length or live programming at launch, the new app will have popular video clips from NBC’s cable news network. That includes content from Rock Center, Nightly News, Meet the Press, Dateline, Morning Joe, Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Rachel Maddow Show, The Ed Show, and Last Word.

This isn’t the first NBC Universal property to come to Xbox Live — there’s already a SyFy channel. But the new app is being launched just a month after Microsoft would be backing away MSNBC.com, its online news joint venture with NBC Universal. The property was renamed NBC News and taken over by NBCU.

Microsoft now has a pretty full slate of video content on Xbox Live, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Verizon, Comcast Xfinity TV, HBO GO, Crackle, Epix, and MLB.TV.
