Joss Whedon Returns To Write And Direct 'The Avengers 2'

Joss Whedon has decided to return to write and direct The Avengers 2, according to a statement from Disney Chairman Bob Iger.

This should come as no surprise since the first installment raked in over $1.5 billion world wide, but as recently as this year’s Comic-Con, Whedon’s return wasn’t a sure thing.  Speaking on a panel at the  event, the director told fans,  “I have not come to a decision on directing Avengers 2 yet”

It appears Disney was able to entice the director after some serious negotiations, purportedly offering him the big raise he deserved for creating a cash hog for the studio.  A recent report by the Wrap says the recent quarterly income at Disney Studios  “jumped to $313 million from $49 million a year earlier,” mostly because of the success of The Avengers.

According to Variety, the studio even got Whedon to sign on to do an ABC TV series based on Marvel characters. There were no details released on who those characters will be, but the news will certainly get fans excited.

The Avengers 2 does not have a release date,  but it can be expected that the movie will hit theaters some time in 2015 after Disney unloads its upcoming slate of Marvel films.  Iron Man 3  and Thor: The Dark World will be released in 2013, while 2014 will bring Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy to the silver screen.
