The Dark Knight Rises was the most anticipated blockbuster of the summer. However it’s debut was marred by the tragic mass shooting in Aurora, Co. Now Warner Bros. has decided they will delay releasing how well the movie did in its opening weekend, out of respect for the victims, according to a EW report.
The studio issued a statement that there will be no reporting of the opening weekend box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises.
“Out of respect for the victims and their families,” the statement reads, “Warner Bros. Pictures will not be reporting box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises throughout the weekend. Box office numbers will be released on Monday.”
Early Friday morning, a heavily armed gunman opened fire in an Aurora, CO movie theater during a midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises. James Eagan Holmes, the suspect apprehended after the massacre, is accused of killing 12 moviegoers and wounding 38.
Even though Warner Bros. will remain silent about the box office numbers of Christopher Nolans’s final Batman movie until Monday, other studios have not committed to following suit.
It has already been reported that the film grossed a record-breaking $30.6 million after midnight showings. That means Dark Knight Rises surpassed the $30.2 million earned by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, which which was carried in 3D. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had the biggest midnight debut in movie history with $43.5 million.
