Nicki Minaj headed back to her native Trinidad to film a video for her new single “Pound the Alarm.” Donning a flashy costume reflecting those worn at the famous Trinidad and Tobago concert, the singer performed in the streets alongside star Machel Montano. Filming took place in Belmont on Thursday, with Minaj riding on the back of a lorry to simulate a real carnival.
“Just wrapped an amazing video on an amazing island. #Trinidad #poundthealarm” she tweeted afterwards. “The heat in Trinidad is on another level. O-o The girls in the vid are drop dead gorgeous & I’m not just saying it cuz I’m from here!”
Originally born Onika Tanya Maraj in Belmont, Trinidad, Minaj has been representing her home worldwide, traveling between London and the U.S. for performances at Hackney Weekend and the BET Awards, before hitting the Caribbean for the video shoot. Billboard noted that Minaj is one of only two acts this year to have both a top 10 selling song and album.
