When it comes to three-quels, it’s rare that a movie franchise can live up to its name, but judging by the critics, Men In Black 3 may have defied the odds.

In the third installment of the alien adventure film, Agent J (Will Smith) finds out that his old partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) is in grave danger. In order to rescue K, and save humanity, J travels back in time to 1969  and teams up with K’s younger self (Josh Brolin).

Boosted by how well Men In Black 3 stayed consistent with its two predecessors, Josh Brolin is able to be a believable younger Tommy Lee Jones.  Also to note is how well Will Smith carried the comedy aspects of the film.   Critics certainly felt the film was worth the trip to the movie theater.

Check out what some of them had to say below:

Men in Black 3 arrives in the multiplexes of the world with no particular agenda. Which may be part of the reason that it turns out to be so much fun.” — A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Sonnenfeld and Cohen move their baby along with an integrity and gait that ought to serve as a blueprint for other filmmakers faced with the particular challenges of reviving big-ticket and time-dated hunks of pop culture. Amid the mayhem, the movie is sophisticated enough to note the family resemblance between Rick Baker-stitched aliens and the human creatures who populated Andy Warhol’s Factory in the downtown Manhattan of 1969.” – Lisa Schwarzbaum, EW

“Brolin brings in a true actor’s grace, adding humor and heart that help explain the origins of Agent K’s moody blues.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“Did the world need another Men in Black? No, not at all. But if there had to be one, then it’s certainly a relief that it should be one as agreeable as this.” — Shawn Levy, Oregonian

“Exactly what you’d expect: amiable mediocrity and nicely laid-back performances with pricey special effects plugging in the gaps where jokes should be.” — Vadim Rizov, Boxoffice Magazine
