Gary Oldman signed on the dotted line to join Jose Padilha’s Robocop remake. Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous requirements of a corporation.
Robocop is and adaptation of the 1987 sci-fi film set in crime-ridden Detroit. OCP is a massive company that has developed a huge crime fighting robot, that winds up developing a rather dangerous glitch. The company sees a way to get back in favour with the public when a cop named Alex Murphy is killed by a street gang. Murphy’s body is reconstructed within a steel shell and named Robocop. The robot is very successful against criminals, and becomes a target of supervillian Boddicker.
Joel Kinnaman will play the title role, as the cop named Alex Murphy. Marc Abraham and Eric Newman from Strike Entertainment are producing.
Oldman was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his leading role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and can be seen back on the big screen this summer in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
The production is anticipating a September shoot in Toronto, Canada, and has a tentative release date for the summer of 2013.
