Charles Rangel Touts His Puerto-Rican Roots as He Faces Latino Challenger

Rep. Charles Rangel touted his Puerto Rican roots Tuesday as he battles to win reelection against a Latino challenger in an increasingly Latino district.

Rangel said he doesn’t talk about his past much because of a bad relationship with his father, who left his mom when he was a child.

“It is a beautiful heritage,” the Harlem Dem said of his dad’s Puerto Rican ancestry. “I’ve really tried also to track down the name.”

The 81-year-old picked up the endorsement of Rep. Jose Serrano (D-Bronx) at City Hall. Serrano asked supporters to consider Rangel “no different than Serrano.”
