Famed pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans was attacked and carjacked yesterday in the middle of the afternoon while pumping gas on Detroit’s west side. Winans sustained no serious injuries in the assault.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the assailants were able to make off with $200 cash along with Winans’ $15,000 Rolex watch and Infiniti QX56 SUV. Winans, 54, told reporters on the scene that four or five men followed him out of the gas station and then assaulted him after engaging in small talk to distract him.
“I’m just saddened that it has come to this,” Winans said. “This kind of nonsense just has to stop. It’s just the savageness of what’s happening in the street.”
Winans is the pastor of the megachurch Perfecting Church on Detroit’s east side, and his new single “Let the Church Say Amen” is currently the top gospel song in the country, according to Billboard.
