Sony Pictures just released the trailer to the long awaited Motown movie Sparkle. The film is based on the iconic female singing group ‘The Supremes’, which began as three sisters who start out singing in a local church and have dreams of great succecss in the Motown music industry.
Sadly, this will be the last on-screen performance from legendary singer Whitney Houston, who struggled with a cocaine addiction during her long career. Houston died in February after her battle with drug abuse. The Grammy award winning singer was poised for a movie comeback in Sparkle, 20 years after her defining film portrayal in The Bodyguard.
In the movie, Houston is playing the mother of Jordan Sparks, the lead character.
Also starring in the film besides Sparks, is Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo, who will play her two sisters. Derrick Luke, Mike Epps, and Cee-Lo Green are also stars who will play in the movie.
The brief trailer displays the daughters in performance and Houston telling them, “I always knew you had the gift.”
Sparkle is scheduled to be released on Aug. 17, 2012.
