People’s Choice Awards 2012: Katy Perry & Rihanna No Show But Win Big

Katy Perry was a fan favorite at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards scoring five awards while Rihanna snagged favorite R&B artist.

Though the ‘Firework’ singer tweeted she would skip the People’s Choice Awards just days after slamming her parents over her pending divorce, the starlet still had the best night ever.

Perry, who recently split from husband Russell Brand, laundry list of wins include favorite female artist, favorite music video, favorite song of the Year, favorite tour headliner, and the singer even picked up an award for the favorite TV guest star for her cameo on ‘How I Met You Mother’.

Meanwhile, Demi Lovato’s win for favorite pop artist performance surprisingly beat out heavy hitters Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Maybe Lovato’s presence ushered in some last minute well wishes for her. She was the only one in the category to attend. Demi gave a winning performance of her single ‘Give Your Heart A Break’ before receiving the award.

Some other big wins of the night included Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” who won favorite album of the year nod at the bash, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Bruno Mars was honored with favorite male artist, beating out Justin Bieber and Blake Shelton, among others. And probably the two most unsurprising winners were Eminem, for hip-hop and Taylor Swift, for country.

Rihanna, who recently released the artwork for her new album title single (Talk That Talk), won for best R&B artist. The Barbados singer not only beat out Queen B (Beyonce), but her ex Chris Brown.

Beyond the music, well sorta, ‘Glee’ star Lea Michele grabbed the award for favorite TV comedy actress who was beyond herself over the win.

“I want to dedicate this to my amazing cast — my glee club. I’m an only child, and now I have 11 other siblings,” she said. “This is for our fans. ‘Glee’ would be nothing without you guys. This is thanks to you. We’re all Rachel Barrys out there, so this ones for you.”

Others who won for their acting chops per the fans were Emma Stone and Johnny Depp winning favorite movie actress and favorite movie actor respectively.

Though Katy won big at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, we would like to congratulate all the winners!

Democracy needs journalism it can trust.

This election season, the stakes are higher than usual — and so is the pressure on newsrooms to soften their coverage, stay quiet, or just disappear. Independent reporting, the kind that answers to readers instead of advertisers or political pressure, matters more in a moment like this, not less.

For over 14 years, Atlanta Black Star has stayed independent and reader-funded. We have no corporate owner and no shareholders telling us what to cover or how to cover it. That independence is also our biggest vulnerability: nothing protects it except readers choosing to fund it directly.

Newspaper ad revenue has fallen more than 80% since 2005, and local newsrooms are closing at a rate of roughly two a week nationwide. When outlets go under in a moment like this, it's rarely the independent, reader-funded ones that get to stick around.

We know a request for support isn't why you came here. But without readers choosing to fund this work directly, the depth of reporting we can do at home and abroad shrinks along with everyone else's. If you're not in a position to give, that doesn't change how much we value you as a reader.

If you are able to, a recurring contribution does more for us than a single one-time gift, because it lets us plan the next investigation instead of just the next invoice. It takes about 30 seconds, no long form, no account. Thank you for continuing to support independent journalism and freedom of the press.
