Fans of the sci-fi franchises “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” have historically been locked in an epic bitter rivalry throughout the years. Now George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original “Star Trek” series in the 1960s, is calling on these rivals to make “Star” peace and unite to combat a common enemy: “Twilight.”
Takei posted a video on the website of his 2012 Broadway musical, “Allegiance,” in which he addresses comments made by co-star William Shatner and “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher against their opposing franchises. The actor says both series are “wonderful” in their own ways.
“What’s needed today, now, more than ever is ‘Star’ peace, for there is now “an ominous, mutual threat to all science fiction,” he says. “It’s called ‘Twilight’ and it is really, really bad.”
Now what would make Takei, 74, feel so threatened by a teenage love story involving vampires? The veteran actor explains why the romantic thriller rubs him the wrong way saying,
“Gone is any sense of heroism, camaraderie or epic battle.” He adds, “In its place we have vampires that sparkle and mope and go to high school.”
“Now, I’m not above mixing a little sex appeal to spice up the fantasy,” the openly gay actor adds in his video, as photos of ‘Twilight’ actors posing shirtless pop up. “But sci-fi fans, be warned. There are no great stories, characters or profound life lessons to be had in ‘Twilight.’ No. In ‘Twilight,’ the only message that rings through loud and clear is, ‘Does my boyfriend like me?’ Let us band together to combat this mutual threat.”
Takei may have forgotten to mention that ‘The Twilight’ saga has, in a very short amount of time, garnered a fan base that may arguably be as large as those of “Star Trek” and “Star Wars . This legion of teenage girls pumped up the film’s worldwide gross earnings to $633 million since its release on November 18.
Takei is known for his sense of humor and parody videos and is a frequent guest and caller on the raunchy “Howard Stern Show” on Sirius XM radio. Last month, he targeted Kim Kardashian and her family by posting a parody photo of Kardashian and what appeared to be her sisters Khloe and Kourtney as characters from the “Star Trek” franchise. He titled it “Keeping Up With The Cardassians.” and wrote “Now THIS I would watch!”
