“Paranormal Activity 3” set a box office record over this past weekend. The new horror flick continued its franchise’s success by having a $54 million opening.
According to studio estimates, the scary film had the biggest opening ever for a horror movie. It topped the previous record which was set by Paranormal Activity 2, which debuted at $40.7 million. Part 3 also managed to break the record for the biggest opening ever for an October movie by just passing the $50.4 million opener set last year by Paramount’s “Jackass 3D”.
Paul Dergarabedian, a box-office analyst said he was expecting “Paranormal Activity 3” to open at $35 million, mentioning that movies have been underperforming this fall.
“This brand is as solid as the ‘Twilight’ brand or the ‘Jackass’ brand. There are certain brands that just transcend any kind of box-office rhyme or reason. They look like they’re shot with a home video recorder, and people just relate to it,” Dergarabedian said.
