Nick Ashford Of Ashford And Simpson Dies Of Throat Cancer

Legendary songwriter and artist Nick Ashford of Ashford and Simpson has died on Monday August 22nd after losing his battle with throat cancer. Ashford’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg confirmed to the Associate Press that he died at a New York City hospital.

The “Solid As A Rock” singer will be remembered for the many hits he penned with his wife Valerie. Just to name a few,

“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Reach Out And Touch Somebody’s Hand” by Diana Ross and “You’re All I Need To Get By” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan (and later remade by Whitney Houston).

As the news spread of Ashford’s passing many entertainers sent condolences,

His music is unmatched in terms of great songwriting,” Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire said after learning of his friend’s death.

“They had magic and that’s what creates those wonderful hits, that magic,” White added. “Without those songs, those artists wouldn’t have been able to go to the next level.”

Alicia Keys added on twitter, “I’m so sad that he’s gone. … So many of the greatests are going to a greater place … what a legacy of infectious music … man!”
