Update-Katy Perry has finally done it!! The numbers are in the 26 year old pop singer has just tied Michael Jackson’s previously held record for most number 1 hit singles from the same album, as her latest hit, Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F), finally made it’s way to number one this week. The current number to beat? 5 no. 1 singles on one album.
According to Boston.com, Perry is the first woman and second artist overall (second only to King of Pop Michael Jackson of course), to garnish such a title in Billboards top 100, 53 year history.
Katy’s other number 1 hits from the Teenage Dream album includes, Firework, California Gurls, Teenage Dream and E.T (a Kanye West Collaboration).
Katy celebrated earlier by posting the following tweet;
“What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1.”
This momentous fete by Perry begs the question: Is Katy Perry a better pop star than her current peers like Lady Gaga and Rihanna? There is no question that while Katy did match Jackson’s record it would be unfair and almost blasphemous to compare her to Madonna and Whitney Houston who did have the level of technology that’s available today. Gaga and Rihanna are more comparable. Perry had long been noted a “one hit wonder” and many were just waiting for her time to bow out. Yet, she’s proved them wrong five times! Music enthusiasts are claiming there may be a 6th hit from Teenage Dreams!
In the social media game Lady Gaga and Rihanna have Katy Perry beat by miles – but as shown by Perry’s numerous hits – millions of Twitter and Facebook doesn’t equate to hit singles. The question still remains: What makes an artist better than another and should Katy Perry be considered a better artist than her counterparts Lady Gaga and Rihanna?
