The African Meeting House in Nantucket, Massachusetts was vandalized with disgusting messages left on the building. The incident was reported Sunday, March. 11.
Police are searching for the person or people responsible for desecrating the historical site that dates back to 1827 as a church and school for Black people. “N*gger Leave” was spray painted on the church along with a phallic symbol.
“This senseless act is not only a senseless crime but an attack on the rich history of this very community,” police said of the incident.
Marito Rivero, the Museum of African-American History director said that when other members of the community heard about what happened to the building, they came out to help. Rivero said, “Wonderful outpouring from the Nantucket residents. They were just universally terrific to surround our team and our staff with that kind of positive energy.”
