Black excellence abounds in Riverside, Calif., where the Law Offices of Zulu Ali was just named one of the 10 best law firms in the state by the American Institute of Legal Counsel.
Boasting more than 15 years of experience in the criminal justice system, Ali’s firm was recognized for customer satisfaction in the areas of criminal defense, immigration and personal injury, according to a press release. The Tennessee native and U.S. Marine vet said he was inspired by the work and legacy of noted civil rights attorneys like Thurgood Marshall, Charles Hamilton Houston, Avon Wilson Jr. and other leaders of the civil rights movement.
While the law firm has been subjected to scrutiny because of its diverse makeup, (Spanish, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu and Visaya are spoken by staff members), the office remains devoted to its mission of advocating for changes in the law when it is unjust.
“I believe the mission of a lawyer should be to strive for change and challenge the courts when there is injustice,” Ali, the firm’s founder and principal attorney, said in a statement. “In our firm, we put it on the line despite the immense scrutiny and consequences we may face.”
Had it not been for “brave attorneys and advocates who are willing to step out the box, we would still be in segregation or servitude if the laws and courts were not challenged,” he continued. “Many attorneys/advocates are chilled and neutralized because they are usually targeted, ridiculed and subjected to reprimand or worst when they test the status quo. But it is necessary despite the risks.”
In addition to his recent accolades, Ali also has been named among the Top 100 Lawyers by the Prestigious National Black Lawyers organization, Premier 100 Trial Attorneys by the American Academy of Trial Attorneys (aka the National Academy of Jurisprudence) and Top 10 Best Immigration Lawyers by the AIOLC, just to name a few.
