Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa
The Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa announced its first armed action on video Dec. 12, 2011. The intended goal of the militant group is to spread jihad across a larger section of West Africa, though operations have been limited to southern Algeria and northern Mali. During the late March 2012 Tuareg rebellion, MOJWA stated that it had taken part in the capture of Gao in Mali, along with Ansar Dine, which was confirmed later by residents of the town.

Salafi Islamist
Murgan Salem al-Gohary, a Salafi Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove all idols from Egypt. Murgan, who professes links to the Taliban, called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues.
“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said recently during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.
