9 White Celebs, World Leaders Whose Families Owned Slaves

anderson cooper

Anderson Cooper

A rule of thumb is: where there is old money, you will find some connection to slavery. So of course it wasn’t hard to determine that Anderson Cooper was connected, in a familial way, to slavery.  His bloodline is tied to the Vanderbilts, one of the richest families in American history. Cooper’s great-great-grandfather, Cornelius Vanderbilt – who was also Cooper’s cousin through inbreeding – was a tycoon who built his wealth from shipping and railroads. He also owned plantations: one in particular was in Georgetown, S.C., where Michelle Robinson Obama’s ancestor Jim Robinson, who was born a slave in 1850, worked.

British Prime Minister David Cameron

David Cameron

The family of the current Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, benefited from the enslavement of African people. According to Dr. Nick Draper of University College London, as many as one-fifth of wealthy Victorian Britons inherited part or all of their fortunes from the slave economy. As a result, there are now wealthy families all around the U.K. still indirectly enjoying the proceeds of slavery they have inherited.  In addition to benefiting from slavery while it was legal in the British empire, Cameron’s ancestors were given £4,101, equal to more than £3 million today ($4.7 million dollars), for the 202 black people they enslaved on the Grange Sugar Estate in Jamaica.

  1. I had not idea. Some of these folks should pay up.

  2. I wonder if the the people on the list already knew this about their families.

  3. Justin Lawson Nash says:

actually Obama is white, just as much as he is black

  4. Mocha Leeshus says:

IT IS NOT A SHOCK OR UNBELIEVABLE THAT JOHN MCAIN, THE BUSH'S, ANDERSON COOPER, PAULA DEAN, DAVID CAMERON….. AND SO MUCH MORE WEALTHY WHITE AMERICANS AND BRITISH PEOPLE OWNED SLAVES. WHAT IS SAD IS THAT THEIR ACQUIRING SUCH RENOWNED WEALTH CAME AS A RESULT OF THE BLOOD OF BLACK PEOPLE. THESE PEOPLE ARE STILL UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT THEIR ANCESTORS ACTIONS OF SUPERIORITY AND ENTITLEMENT AS A RESULT OF THEIR EVIL EFFORT TO RID THE AMERICAS OF BLACKS SHOULD BE SWEPT UNDER THE RUG. MY CONTENTION, IS THAT THE SINS OF THE FATHERS WILL BE PASSED DOWN UP TO 3 OR 4 GENERATIONS AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES FROM THERE. GOD IS NOT ASLEEP, HE AVENGES THE HELPLESS IN MANY WAYS NOT JUST FINANCIALLY. IN SHORT, THESE PEOPLE WE SEE THE EFFECT OF THE SINS OF THEIR ANCESTORS BEING BESTOWED ON THEIR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

  5. Interesting that the word "unnatural" was still used to describe slave/owner sexual relations. Very interesting indeed and not in a positive way either. Are we subtly or not so subtly agreeing with that point of view?

  6. Michael Vidal says:

-_- lol you forever with that

  7. Justin Lawson Nash says:

    it's true though

  8. Vohn Lewis says:

    Barry Serato = Barack Obama.

  9. Alfred Mimms says:

So we are blaming the descendants for the misdeeds of the forefathers?

  10. If your great great grandfather was murdered and robbed of his land and possessions by my great great grandfather, and you knew I was the descendant of the person who murdered your ancestors and took his land, would it be OK for me to tell you to get over it?

  11. the descendants are benefitting still from these misdeeds- born with gold spoons in their mouths-with the gold stolen from africa. Until they not only acknowledge the past wrongs of their ancestors but actively participate in changing the current economic and social disparities created by their ancestors actions, then YES THEY STILL CARRY THE BLAME and the BILL FOR REPARATIONS.

  12. Victorious Suavesito says:

from my perspective, when the writer said "unnatural relations between the slave and the slave master." they were talking about rape- i def agree with it being unnatural.

  13. Victorious Suavesito says:

people with Old Money tend to know their history hella more than people with No Money.

  14. Katharine Hart-Watkins says:

Is 'unnatural' the term for "cross cultural relations(sex)" or "sex out of wedlock" or rape?. Pre 1960's, cross cultural relationships were risky, if not illegal many places. Out of wedlock has been happening since biblical times. So has rape. Unnatural sounds like a test tube baby and is a poor choice of words, because no one of conjugal beginnings is of an unnatural decent; these conceptions were deviant, but not unnatural.

  15. but to the human race he is seen as black and everyone knows that.

  16. Justice Waleford says:

    Obama is a hamite.

  17. Sabra Muhammad says:

The term unnatural is used because it was rape. Our women were married to our men. They didn't willingly have sexual relations with the slavemaster.

  18. Not according to the one drop rule.

  19. Yeah we still that. That is our HISTORY.SO YEAH WE STILL WITH THAT.SORRY

  20. Sweets Griffin says:

Justin Lawson Nash NO IT'S NOT

  21. Kimmie Kim says:

    No.

  22. Unnatural was probably a poor choice of verbiage since in our modern context we should not ostracize interracial couples, nor let this poor choice of words distract us from the main point of the blog. During slavery, it was a very common practice for black women on the plantation to be required to have sex with their slave masters even though they were married and had their own families to tend to. The pain of this existence still looms large today. These black women were used as breeders on the same plantation that their husbands lived on and this is not how the creator of the universe, and all things in it intended for us to live.

  23. Itai Kunonga says:

Yvonne Cole …he does not use "everybody's" rule that's why he stuck it to the man by declaring his mothers race to be eligible…even this articles footnote makes a point to explain why he is on the list…

  24. Itai Kunonga says:

He used the British law of "citizenry" against them, to be British, you have to prove your grand-pappy or pappy was "British" coz they sent out men to colonise others, not women, if women came, they were already "taken", so all these men raped locals and so the Queen and Empire did not want to provide for them if they ever came to England looking for their daddy…so you had now prove that your mama was "British"…tru-u story!

  25. The son suffers for the sins of the father. At least the Germans acknowledged the atrocities they committed and paid the Jews handsomely. America has yet to deliver on those 40 acres.

  26. Ángelo Romeo Martínez says:

"This is indicative of the inheritance of privilege: when it comes to wealth, white folks have been given a head start."

Whenever I discuss racial privilege I shut the debate down with that point exactly! Old money usually is slave money…just as they have inherited wealth there are many that inherit poverty.

  27. Timothy J Vereschagin says:

Quit yelling "mocha" and lay off the caffeine…

  28. Timothy J Vereschagin says:

Why does any of this even matter? The past is the past, culpability ends with the original sinner.

  29. Zak Martin says:

What do you mean "our women"?

  30. Zak Martin says:

    He's a ham, anyway.

  31. Zak Martin says:

Says who? If a bunch of Israeli "settlers" force a Palestinian family out of their home at gunpoint, does that mean the property belongs to them if they can hold onto it long enough, or to their children? Of course not. It still belongs to the rightful owner. Or if a hoard of cash or gold turns up in a Swiss bank and it transpires that it was stolen from a certain family by the Nazis, is the bank entitled to keep it because the original owners are dead? No, it belongs to their heirs.
The past is only the past if it doesn't "carry over" into the present. And old sins have long shadows.

  32. Dwayne Mayes says:

Unless the children enjoy the benefits of that sin…

  33. Zak Martin says:

Yvonne Cole I've never regarded him as black. Nor do I think he regards himself as black. He grew up "white", and only embraced his blackness to get the black and Hispanic vote.

  34. Julia Wallace says:

Re: Obama mixed race- "Unnatural relations"? You mean rape, right? Black women raped by white male slaveowners. Don't half-ass calling out the heinousness of slavery by ignoring the rape of Black women.

  35. Foebia Khufu says:

All them are related anyway or apart of the same corrupt group.

  36. Bigdawg's Aspirations says:

Katharine Hart-Watkins The hell you preach they were unnatural. You folks will do anything to protect white supremacy.

  37. Beverley Sinclair says:

from what I can gather..'listening' to this conversation….everybody will be tarnished with the same brush 'so to speak' and as most of us are mixed somewhere down the line…we all pay for the sins of the perpetrators….

  38. Timothy J Vereschagin shut up and listen to the truth

  39. Well said, the bible does say the sins of the father will visit the Children of the third and fourth generation

  40. and notice all the poor white people are not much better in society as blacks. We can clearly see that in Irish people. Irish were treated at times as bad as blacks b/c they were Catholics. And they are not really ruling the world right now. They are middle class.

  41. He gestated inside of the womb of a White woman, and was raised by and around White people, a fact that many Black people seem to ignore.

  42. Wanda Ifyaknowme says:

UNNATURAL RELATIONS?!! YOU MEAN RAPE. SAY IT: R-A-P-E

  43. Zak Martin Just what she said; "our women." As in NOT YOURS.

  44. Donte Daniels says:

Guess what. .They still own slaves! !

  45. as far as the Obama comments back in the slave days one ounce of black blood makes you a black man.

  46. Ángelo Romeo Martínez says:

Well that's the funny thing about the socio-political system we know as "race". When this country was founded it was by the wealthy English. The poor and underclass came much later. During the Civil War and right after was when the ideology of race came to the picture. Once they got people to unite by pigment it was much easier to enact oppressive laws and to gain a military force willing to fight to save the economic status of the wealthy. It's very much the same today. The wealthy go to specific schools and either become CEOs of major corporations or get into politics. They either profit from war or vote to go to war, meanwhile the poor will enlist in the armed forces with absolutely nothing to financially gain from it.

  47. Fran Dunham says:

Your contention about the three generations is actually written in the bible. Makes one wonder if that generational curse ends after three generations or when the last generation stops the madness.
They try to use bible verses as justification negating to also point out that in the bible you also had to release a slave from bondage and any financial obligations at the end of 6 years. Killing a slave meant death to the person who killed them. And scaring a slave also had consequences.

  48. Fran Dunham says:

Christopher Irons -Trying to do away with God is what got us in the condition we are in. Following traditions and idols of worship that are forbidden. Take a look around the world, it hasn't worked out well for the majority. What you suggest won't do away with God but it will surely allow satan in.

  49. Timothy J Vereschagin Can't handle the truth huh?

  50. Fran Dunham says:

Yvonne Cole The human race sees what they want. If he had been what the majority see as successful as a president, history books would have forgotten that he was bi-racial and did the same thing that has been done through out history, laid that claim to fame on the caucasian race with footnotes about how some "claim" he was biracial but that it can't be proven.

  51. Fran Dunham says:

Only after you returned all your ancestors had stolen and whatever profits came from that theft. You can't right a wrong by lying about, distorting, or ignoring it. And the ramifications of those actions will survive as long as the bloodlines of those ancestors continue in any way the perpetration of that legacy.

  52. Tamara Laird : Which is why the Irish lobbied Congress to be called White, bought the idea of race reinvented to use against Africans when before the idea was used by the British to oppress the Irish as a race ("How the Irish became White" by Ignatiev and "The Invention of the White Race" by Theodore W. Allen).
After having their behinds kicked up and down the ancient world, they come here first as indentured servants alongside Africans mind you and things are fine until the Brits tell you you're White. After that lie is invented in response to labor solidarity because the Brits don't want to pay for labor anymore, you Irish decide to join them and become this demonic force of terror and proceed to try to kill the spirit of every African you encounter to this day.
Gang raping, lynching, psychological torture ruled the day and thanks to your latest descendents in the form of Police Commissioner Kelly in New York city with the stop and frisk policy and terror police force very much in effect like the slave patrols of yesteryear, that spirit of evil in you all still thrives.
This idea of race was INVENTED to control labor and make the pocketbook heavy and it worked. Black people's only solution is to pull every dime away from your corporations and institutions that thrive to this day and boycott you privileged masses to your knees.

  53. They will never pay. Blacks have to boycott these companies and banks that did this. Money and the loss of it is the only thing they all understand.

  54. Fran Dunham says:

Erik Anbessa – I don't think they carry the blame of their ancestors. I think they carry the blame of continuing the legacy of their ancestors. Slavery cannot be undone, but the mindset that came with it and the institutionalized racism is what is being held against the perpetrators today. They aren't paying for their father's transgressions, they are paying for their own.

  55. Fran Dunham says:

Of course they do. They can trace their roots, we can't.

  56. Victorious Suavesito Too True!!!

  57. I am not a rapist and I'm not paying for that as descendents of the victims.

  58. Very difficult to get information outright on the slave ownership of the Vanderbilts. They hide this on Staten Island too so it helps tremendously to see this.

  59. Fran Dunham says:

Ángelo Romeo Martínez It was the Scandinavians, the Dutch and then the English who arrived in the United States first. The Vikings and then The Dutch who were one of the major transporters of slaves and founders of Wall Street. The English that arrived were the dredges of their own societies just like in Australia.

  60. Fran Dunham says:

Keep in mind that our ancestors were promised land that the caucasians didn't have the human right to give away.

  61. Fran Dunham says:

We are blaming descendants for the continuation of the mindset and legacy. Not slavery, it's aftermath that is institutionalized and continues today.

  62. Fran Dunham says:

Excuse me, but if there is a mixture in my blood, it was through hateful, devious, and degenerate actions perpetuated against my ancestors actions during slavery. NO shame or blame on me!

  63. Fran Dunham says:

Timothy, it's easy to say the past is the past when it's not used as a tool to debase today. When that past did not obliterate your ties to your past. When that past benefited your ancestors and was left as a legacy to you.

There are all types of studies that point to the importance of knowing who you are. Adopted children have been given the right to find out who their biological parents are for just that reason.

Black people in the United States are the only people on this planet who have no home. We don't belong to Africa.

It's not the sins of the fathers. Are you really going to deny that through that sin there are a multitude of institutionalized traditions that continue to abuse the black race today?

Statistics are fine when being quoted, but statistics only tell numbers, they don't portray the conditions that brought those numbers about.

Statistics say things like, more black people are in prison. They don't say things like, there is a liquor store on every corner in black neighborhoods. They don't point out that the CIA infused drugs into black neighborhoods. They don't mention things such as where the guns that black youths are killing one another with come from. But the condition of black people is used to justify the continuation of abuse.

Yesteryear haunts, yesterday hurts, and today troubles. When the caucasion race picked up those sins and ran with them, they became the bearers of the torch. As bearers, they made themselves partakers of that bitter sin.

  64. Fran Dunham says:

  65. Coco Farias says:

i was just going to say the same thing. "although obama is not white…" yeah he is… just ask his mom.

  66. Coco Farias says:

Zak Martin which put him in the white house thank you very much.. .. the repubs never learn…

  67. Coco Farias says:

Zak Martin they mean black women.

  68. Fran Dunham says:

I would like to say that this is one of the more intelligent conversations over race I have read in some time. Thank all of you for your input. Whether I agreed or not with your stance, the discourse remains civil…:)

  69. Kimberly Stewart says:

Yemoja Fola Then why did he marry a CHOCOLATE SISTER? HE DID NOT GET A FAIR SKIN SISTER WITH STRINGY LONG HAIR HE MARRIED A WOMAN WHO LOOKS LIKE SHE IS A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE MOTHER LAND…HE HAD CHOICES.

  70. Kimberly Stewart says:

Coco Farias Yemoja Fola Then why did he marry a CHOCOLATE SISTER? HE DID NOT GET A FAIR SKIN SISTER WITH STRINGY LONG HAIR HE MARRIED A WOMAN WHO LOOKS LIKE SHE IS A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE MOTHER LAND…HE HAD CHOICES.

  71. Kimberly Stewart says:

Zak Martin Yemoja Fola Then why did he marry a CHOCOLATE SISTER? HE DID NOT GET A FAIR SKIN SISTER WITH STRINGY LONG HAIR HE MARRIED A WOMAN WHO LOOKS LIKE SHE IS A DIRECT DESCENDANT OF THE MOTHER LAND…HE HAD CHOICES.

Deborah Martin OH MY GOSH – YOU HIT IT SQUARE ON THE HEAD –

  73. Kimberly Stewart says:

Fran Dunham TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH – WOW – SO TRUE SO TRUE

  74. What part of President Obama looks white to you. Skin color says he is Black, and skin color is the deciding factor.

  75. As long as the descendants are reaping the benefits of those enslaved – YES.

  76. Let's really know the truth and check out your own DNA. All you have to do is look in your own closets and see the White people in your family, or just look at your skin tone and features. Also, 95% of African Americans have Native America blood, and 65% of White Americans have Native Blood. Truth be told, All of us, have some mixed blood in us, if we live in America. then, when you travel to sections of Africa, like Benin, Wet Africa, you may not see as many lighter Black folk, because mixing in the races was limited. Now, how you act, is based on how you was "raised". Culture is based on your group identification. If you identify with the group that you were raised as, then this is how you will feel, act and show up. Obama had the up-bringing of White grandparents, an African father, a White mother and an Asian-pacific father. He is multi-cultural in Black skin.

  77. Sabra Muhammad says:

Thank you Bro Donald for having a Sistahs back! I refuse to respond to him because I don't entertain satan. I went on his page and it confirmed he is exactly that, an evil mischiefmaker. His behavior in indicative of his ancestors. He monitor OUR pages and/forums to dispute what we discuss just as his ancestors did on the plantations when our ancestors congregated and strategized. He can't help himself, it's in his DNA.

  78. Yes Ma'am; I recognize the type on first sight, spot 'em like stank on do-do. they always got something to say on ours; if they were truly our friends they would be among their own in deep conflict against the racism that is teeming in their communities.

  79. Brian Williams says:

understand that if you was'nt white you was black in their eyes & heart

  80. Nakia Demetrius says:

Tamara Laird Irish folks run the politics here is the midwest…………and i am sure elsewhere as well…..oh the Kennedys…………so white Irish folks aintt doing bad.

  81. Nakia Demetrius says:

Deborah Martin sister we have an identity crisis.we know we black but we keep being told color dont matter…..we believe in that piece of paper……the constitution and stay confused.

  82. Ayanda Ndaba says:

    Bro Donald THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  87. You mean one drop…

  88. Zak Martin STFU already and find something constructive to do…like get back to work!

  89. You best believe ther's some black blood lines somewhere.

  90. Zak Martin Never seen anything where he has called or considered himself White…But I guess you white people know more than us….

  91. Seven generations. That's the traditional number for the sins of the fathers.

  92. I would love for there to come a day when we stop referring to people as Black or White! Nobody is Truly Black or White, we come in all shades from Porcelain Ivory to Deep Mocha. This Black vs, White business only polarizes people and is a disservice to us all!

  93. The United States government has paid reparations to everyone and race of people that they have wronged. Except for the American Black man/woman! http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~kmporter/historyreparations.htm

  94. Emma Garcia says:

Ángelo Romeo Martínez Yawn, you sound like you just completed Intro to Sociology 101.

  96. HELL NO!

  97. Sam James says:

This is the only way we gonna get something to happen on our behalf as a people …..hit them in the pocket as that's the only place it hurts because marching/preaching/shooting/gang banging/etc. DOES NOT WORK…..since so called "freedom" we been doing all that and still it's about black n white world over

  98. Sam James says:

Check out the story of Lena Baker Zak Martin…..they raped our women and used both men and women like dogs n cats for mating to make their money…..get it???

  99. Sam James says:

    For real they do

  100. Sam James says:

Sorry Elsa when this is done the rich will become poor and the poor will have a chance to be not called or be poor…..a mere wish right now because race means money

  101. THIS IS NOT SURPRISING AT ALL! I will also add the fact that most African Americans do not have white blood , this is a popular myth, and only about 35 percent have native American blood. Most African Americans are fully African period and lets not for get everybody that is native African is not BLUE BLACK as many are led to believe.this whole melting pot theory is crap…

  102. can't you see the inbreeding.

  103. Sharon Molino says:

Just as we are not our brothers keeper, none of us alive today, no matter what color our skin or who our ancestors were, are responsible for their history. However, all of us are responsible for the future of our descendants.

  104. Nikki Love says:

What is "unnatural" about sex with slaves, their both human. Inappropriate, unsolicited or unwarranted relations could have been used but to say its unnatural is just wrong.

  105. of course they did.

  106. We are all in this together <3

  107. Clarence Davidson says:

Tamara Laird Have you been to Boston, or Illinois Irish politicians are Kings.

  108. Clarence Davidson says:

Yvonne Cole and he acts like it too

  109. Clarence Davidson says:

Zak Martin Its hard not to be White, try a little harder.

  110. Clarence Davidson says:

David Hoxter Why are you being so petty becoming distracted by semantics loosing sight of what your real focus should be, Reparations.

  111. Clarence Davidson says:

They'd have to be stupid not to know.

Speak Your Mind
