A very creepy first trailer has been released for director Scott Derrickson‘s upcoming horror movie, Sinister. The scary movie features a clever alteration to the found-footage sub-genre.
The film stars Ethan Hawke, who plays Ellison, a widely-acclaimed, bestselling, true crime novelist who has failed for the past 10 years to replicate the success of his first book. In search of inspiration, Ellison repeatedly uproots his family to live closer to the crime scenes he intends to investigate.
This time the author moves directly into the house of a family of four murdered nine months ago and found hanging from a big tree in the yard. After finding a box in the attic that contained video footage of several passed murders, including the previous residents of the house, Ellison and his family find themselves caught up in a supernatural fight for their lives against an ancient evil spirit bent on terrorizing them with hell.
The found footage concept is very important to the plot of the film. However, unlike Paranormal Activity and Chernobyl Diaries, Derrickson uses the grainy 8mm tapes to give background information — which happens to be the scariest part of the film.
In addition to directing, Derrickson wrote the screenplay along with C. Robert Cargill. Alongside Hawke, the movie stars Juliet Rylance, James Ransone, Vincent D’Onofrio and Clare Foley.
Sinister will creep the mess out of you in theaters just before Halloween on October 5th, 2012.
