Pixar continues their dominance at the box office with their latest animation, Brave. For awhile 20th Century Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter looked like it would be standing alone at the top of the box office, but with it’s narrow marketed audience, it only managed to get dead second.
The animated fantasy drama raked in a wopping $24.5 million Friday night. With numbers like that, the film is easily on track to finishing the weekend in the $65-70 million dollar range. Brave opened in a record braking 4,164 theaters, 2,790 of which were 3D showings. The film received an “A” CinemaScore from audiences and continued Pixar’s track record of successful family movies.
On the other hand, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter earned just $6.3 million at 3,106 locations, 2,497 of which were 3D. The Tim Burton directed vampire film achieved only a “C+” CinemaScore from audiences. The film cost around $68 million to make and the studio was hoping for a $20 million opening. At this rate, the film won’t come close to it’s opening weekend goals.
Meanwhile, producers of Brave were tight lipped about how much it cost to make their family film. But with the ability to convert their animated characters into toys, clothing, and amusement park rides, it probably won’t be difficult to turn a profit.
