Assistant Entertainment Editor

DDM is looking for an Assistant Entertainment Editor who can deliver rich, compelling, brand-building content while maintaining high editorial standards for AtlantaBlackStar.com. The assistant editor will be a key member of Atlanta Black Star’s editorial team, working closely with the Managing Editor to lead our up-to-the-minute coverage of breaking entertainment, culture, lifestyle and celebrity news.

They will have a strong ability to juggle daily duties with long-term planning, along with the ability to easily articulate the day’s priorities down to the staff writers and up to the publication’s top editors.

The primary objective of this role is to position Atlanta Black Star as the premier source for Entertainment and Lifestyle news about Black people.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Managing Editor to execute the editorial calendar and strategy for entertainment content
  • Manage daily pitch process, accepting or pushing back on pitches from staff
  • Ability to package stories with a tone that’s fun and conversational, yet highly informational and accurate
  • Develops and maintain relationships with talent agents, others to secure exclusives on a regular basis
  • Conduct interviews in person (on or off camera), by phone or via email when needed
  • Writes clear, concise, catchy headlines that emphasize content’s most unique details to optimize sharing quality while considering SEO standards
  • Has a finger on the pulse of key celebrities, can uncover stories on social platforms and mix news and social aggregation with original reporting
  • Reacts aggressively and decisively to breaking news, helping ABS to win the story on all platforms.
  • Writes breaking stories as needed
  • Manage team of writers and contributors, motivating team success and promoting a culture of collaboration
  • Top-edit all stories within your category, ensuring grammar is clean, tone is on brand, and copy flows
  • Use analytics to optimize performance and maintain consistent growth
  • Collaborate with managing editor and video team to create high-quality, complementary videos
  • Work closely with social media team to ensure each story is effectively socialized

Requirements for Success:

• BA in English or Journalism preferred
• At least two years managing in an editorial position at a digital media company
• Passionate and knowledgeable about entertainment, culture and lifestyle
• Collaboration and organizational skills, deadline-conscious, and goal-oriented
• In-depth knowledge of AP style is helpful
• Strong or unique social media presence a plus
• Well-versed in digital strategy, analytics, and SEO
• A broad network of exceptional writers and contributors, as well as a strong roster of contacts within the industry, is plus
• Exceptional attention to detail with ability to multitask
• Self-starter, highly motivated to succeed under minimal supervision
• Must be able to work weekends and evenings, including holidays
• Excellent teamwork and leadership skills, strong work ethic and passion
• Proven ability to come up with creative concepts
