‘Super Fly, The Musical’ Set For Broadway?

By Courtney

We’ve been following the progress of this upcoming stage musical – aimed forBroadway – since it was first revealed about two years ago.

Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones (Fela!) has been developing an adaptation of Super Fly for the stage as a musical.

Over the last couple of years, there have been workshops, cast announcements for those workshops, and more; as the project inches closer to being fully realized.

Broadway World announced this afternoon that Super Fly, The Musical will finally be coming to Broadway in late 2013, citing Tommy Mottola of The Mottola Group as the source.

There were no casting announcements to go along with that news, although in our last post on this last October, it looked like maybe Justin Guarini was going to star as Priest, aka Super Fly, the mixed-race “drug pusher, stick-up artist and a child of the ghetto, he truly beats the system, outsmarting the corrupt police force so that he can break free and start a new life,” to use the words on the casting notice.

But Guarini posted a comment on this site responding to that last post, saying that he is not the star, he just participated in workshops playing Priest.

What we can confirm for sure is that Curtis Mayfield’s music will be used in the production, including other 70s soul-funk luminaries.
