A teacher at Stoneman Douglas High School was arrested this past weekend after deputies said he left a loaded Glock 9mm gun in a public restroom at the Deerfield Beach Pier.
Chemistry teacher Sean Simpson was arrested and charged Sunday with failing to safely store a firearm, a second-degree misdemeanor, the Miami Herald reported. Simpson’s name is familiar among some local Floridians, however, because he’s the teacher who volunteered to arm himself at school in response to the deadly Parkland school shooting.
The Valentine’s day massacre left 17 people dead and several others wounded.
According to a Broward County sheriff’s report, Simpson didn’t realize his mistake until a drunken homeless man got ahold of the gun. The man picked it up and fired a shot, hitting the bathroom wall. Police said Simpson was eventually able to wrestle the gun away from the man, who was later charged with firing a weapon while intoxicated and trespassing.
“There was a reasonable likelihood that the firearm could have ended up in the hands of a child or the discharge of the firearm could have wounded another person or child,” deputies said in their arrest report.
As for Simpson, he posted a $250 bail and was released from custody.
He is still employed at Stoneman Douglas High and no disciplinary action against him is expected, according to Local 10 News.
