A Louisville man is behind bars after allegedly firing a rifle at police as they responded to a domestic assault at his home last week.
Oscar Walters was arrested Thursday, March 29, on three counts of wanton endangerment of a police officer, assault on an officer, second-degree assault and resisting arrest, station WLKY reported.
Louisville Metro Police was dispatched to the home around 6 p.m. on a report of domestic assault. When officers arrived, Walters’ wife told police he’d assaulted her with a flashlight, leaving visible injuries on her forehead, according to the station.
That’s when officers said Walters fired at them as they approached the home, sending them scrambling for cover. The 68-year-old fired his rifle through the front door, causing its glass to shatter.
Walters then fled the home and refused officers’ commands as they tried to take him into custody. Police said he resisted arrest by pulling away from officers as they struggled to subdue him. One officer even suffered a fractured hand during the arrest.
Critics were quick to call out the discrepancies in how unarmed Black men are treated by police compared to white suspects like Walters, who clearly posed a threat to the officers because he had a gun — and fired it. Meanwhile, Black man Stephon Clark, 22, was fatally shot by police in Sacramento this month for carrying a cell phone.

Walters is currently being held at the Metro Corrections on $100,000 bond. His first court appearance is set for April 10, WLKY reported.
