A 46-year-old Baltimore woman has been charged after authorities say she gave a false report about a robbery and attempted carjacking by two Black men at a mall last week.
Baltimore County Police charged Pamela Davis on Nov. 16 with two counts of giving a false statement to an officer, The Baltimore Sun reported, citing information from Maryland’s Judiciary Case Search.
Officials said they received a call from a woman around 5:40 p.m. on Nov. 14 to report an armed robbery and attempted carjacking at the local Towson mall. In response, the police department requested air support, K-9 units and additional ground support to help find the suspects. The call even prompted nearby college Towson University to send out an alert to students warning them about the alleged robbery, authorities said.
Davis told police she spotted two African-American men in ski masks lurking in the parking lot as she exited the mall that evening. She claimed the men demanded she hand over her car keys, but she gave them her purse instead, which they took before running off. She also told investigators she believed the men had a gun, though she didn’t recall seeing one.
An investigation into the woman’s claims, however, revealed there was no carjacking at all. Surveillance footage showed Davis driving into the mall’s lot and parking, but never leaving her car before driving back out of the lot prior to reporting the alleged robbery, police said.
Davis’ trial is scheduled for Jan. 16.
