Wichita Grandmother Receives Racist Letter Instructing Her To Move: ‘We Don’t Need Any Blacks In It’

On Aug. 22, a Wichita, Kansas grandmother claims she received a racist letter demanding that she and her grandchildren leave the community.

According to KSNW NBC 3 News, Nancy Wirths received an anonymous letter in her mailbox proclaiming that her neighborhood is for “whites only.”

Here is an excerpt:

“We have noticed there are some Black children at your residence. Maybe you are running a daycare or these are your children. In either case, we have put our house for sale. This neighborhood does not need any Blacks in it.”

Wirths is a grandmother of nine, six of whom are biracial. Since receiving the letter, she fears for their safety.

“I hope this never happens to anyone else,” Wirths tells reporters. “I look over my shoulder. I watch. The kids aren’t allowed to be outside.”

The letter claims that Wirths has committed a disservice to the community by having her grandchildren in the neighborhood.

“These are kids under the age of 10 where me and their parents are trying to raise them. You have to love everybody, be friends with everybody. It doesn’t matter if they’re brown, purple,” she says. “… Just a shame that they have taken the innocence away from the children.”

Currently, Wichita police are investigating the origins of the letter. Authorities also state that the writer could be charged with disorderly conduct.
