A Youngstown, Ohio judge removed a Black attorney and took her into custody after she refused to take off a pin supporting the Black Lives Matter movement last week.
According to Ohio’s WKBN Channel 27 News, Judge Robert Milich removed attorney Andrea Burton because the pin showed that she was biased while making the political statement.
“A judge doesn’t support either side,” Milich tells reporters. “A judge is objective and tries to make sure everyone has an opportunity to have a fair hearing, and it was a situation where it was just in violation of the law.”
Burton was sentenced to five days in jail but has been released as of last Friday. The attorney is currently appealing the decision.
WKBN Channel 27 News reports that if Burton loses the appeal, she will have to serve the five days in jail.
