Warm Bodies heats things up this weekend at the box office bringing in $8.7 million in its Friday premiere alone. With numbers like that Summit’s Zombie rom-com is right on target for its projected $20 million in sales for the weekend. Which is not bad, considering most of the population will be sitting in front of a television screen instead of a theater screen come Sunday.
Warm Bodies pretty much trampled its big name competition including the Sylvester Stallone thriller flick Bullet to the Head, which according to BoxOfficeMoJo.com brought in around $1.7 million on its opening night. Also, the comedy Stand Up Guys, boasting the likes of Christopher Walken and Al Pacino, didn’t even manage to reach the $1 million mark.
With past successes in other zombie flicks including 2009’s Zombieland and the 2004 British cult-classic Shaun of the Dead making the top 10 on IMDB’s Top 100 Zombie Films and TV Series, it’s fair to say that audiences love the undead. We will just have to see if the zombie love continues over the weekend.
