5 Things People Need to Know About Cultural Appropriation

Don’t Speak in Another Culture’s Accent

This is an especially sensitive issue in rap culture. One of the biggest culprits being rap newcomer Iggy Azalea. Azalea was raised in Australia and, therefore, has an accent as such. But when she raps, her voice changes drastically. Her voice goes from that of a girl from Mullumbimby, Australia, to what she believes Southern Black women sound like.

Former Flipmode Squad member Rah Digga recently spoke out on the issue.

“Iggy Azalea, I can’t really get into her,” the rapper said. “Because it’s just not real to me. There is a white girl from Australia that spits in an Australian accent, and her name is Chelsea Jane. That I can get into. Teach me Australian hip-hop culture. Don’t come to America and try to convince me that you’re Gangsta Boo. We’re not going to believe you if you’re trying to convince us that you’re out here trap shooting. That’s the problem. They’re too many passes being given.”
