The Law & Order franchise is known for basing episodes on highly publicized current events. Earlier this year, the television drama aired an episode inspired by singers Rihanna and Chris Brown’s sensationalized 2009 domestic violence altercation. Now Law & Order will give reportedly give the Trayvon Martin Case the same treatment.
According to the New York Daily News, actress Cybil Shepard was spotted in New York City on Tuesday filming an upcoming episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit that’s inspired by the Trayvon Martin case.
“In the scene, as Shepherd and her legal team try to leave the court, they’re swarmed by a gaggle of reporters and confronted with angry people waving signs similar to the ones seen at dozens of rallies held in honor of Martin over the last year,” the News reported.
The fatal shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin at the hands of George Zimmerman in February 2012 sparked national outrage, which led to demonstrations by various activist groups and organizations, magazine covers and ads in honor of Martin.
The subsequent acquittal of Zimmerman also led to outrage, and turned a spotlight on the continual racial divisions that exist in the United States.
