Iron Man 3 went into international theaters over the weekend and performed so well that Marvel studio executives’ heads are spinning. Iron Man 3, starring Robert Downey Jr. grossed an estimated $195.3 million in just three days. That puts the Iron Man sequel ahead of Marvels’ golden nugget, The Avengers, which made $185.1million in its debut.
Iron Man 3 has broken a bundle of records already in markets like Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. In the U.K, the film made $21.5 million, followed by Korea at $19.2 million, Australia at $18.4 million, Mexico at $16.1 million, France at $14.7 million, Brazil at $12.3 million, Italy at $11.2 million, Taiwan at $8.4 million, Philippines at $7.4 million, Japan at $5.4 million, India at $5.2 million, Spain at $5 million, Hong Kong at $4.9 million, Malaysia at $4.6 million and Indonesia at $4.5 million.
The only remaining hurdle for Iron Man 3, is it’s domestic debut on May 3. Industry insiders tracked the film debut at around $125 million, but with the success overseas and its potential word-of-mouth marketing it’s possible that Iron Man 3 can take over The Avengers’ $207.4 million opening weekend gross for the biggest U.S. opening ever.
