I really, really wish I’d been able to see this movie at Sundance. David Gordon Green went on the strangest career turnabout ever, taking time off from quiet indie films like All the Real Girls and George Washington to direct Pineapple Express, Your Highness, and (shudder) The Sitter. But now he’s back in indie mode, albeit with some quite un-indie leading men: Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch.
Rudd and Hirsch are in-laws who spend the summer of 1988 painting traffic lines on a remote rural road. All kinds of extremely low-key hijinks ensue (I adore the word “hijinks.” Three tittles in a row).
The film has a lot of great buzz off of Sundance. By all accounts, it’s a return to form for Green, and Rudd and Hirsch have received high praise as well. This trailer, of course, will baffle most fans of their mainstream work.
