Despite the complaints from Betty Shabzz and Coretta Scott King’s daughters, the Lifetime original movie, Betty & Coretta, has still seen great success. The film starring Angela Bassett, Mary J. Blige, Malik Yoba and Lindsay Owen Pierre had a strong premiere last Saturday. So strong, reports are saying the film attracted over 2 million viewers visitors to their network just to tune in.
Betty & Coretta centers on the relationship between Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King. The story goes into the intimate moments of their lives and how they continued as single mothers fighting for their struggles, following the assassinations of their husbands, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Mary J. Blige executive produced the film, along with actors Yoba and Pierre, who played the parts of King and Malcolm X.
“I wanted people to see what Betty & Coretta had to deal with and how everyone is not so perfect,” Blige said about the movie. “We expose that in the film; how Coretta dealt with that. That’s what I wanted out. The fact that they put their husband’s differences aside and looked at the bigger picture.”
Betty & Coretta is set to air again Saturday, February 9 at 10 p.m. on Lifetime.
