The first trailer for Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder has surfaced online, promising a surreal ode to the notion of love. At least, that’s what we’re guessing.
A Terrence Malick film would not be complete without shaky camera work, high definition, a non-linear storyline and heart wrenching voiceovers. To The Wonder — unsurprisingly — seems to have a bit of everything, including Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem.
Affleck stars as Neil, an Oklahoma based man whose love for a beautiful French woman named Marina (Kurylenko) is everything concerning the terms romantic, beautiful, and blissful. That is, until he meets Jane (McAdams) and Marina has a bit of unfortunate circumstances take hold of her life. Neil finds the simpler pleasures offered by Jane to be reminiscent of the times previously shared with Marina, and the true nature of man emerges (in true Terrence Malick fashion). Somewhere in there, Bardem’s Father Quintana offers spiritual guidance.
To The Wonder had audiences on both sides of the fence at the Venice Film Festival, but still managed to earn a considerable amount of critical acclaim. People should not be surprised by a Terrence Malick film at this point. His work in The Tree of Life, The New World and The Thin Red Line have all been fairly consistent in terms of execution (well, maybe minus the dinosaurs in Tree of Life).
To The Wonder is set to hit theaters in the US on April 12, 2013. The famed director is already working on two more projects in post production, Voyage of Time and Knight of Cups. We’ll be sure to fill you in as more information is released. Until then, enjoy the trailer below.
