Say WHAT!? The Hollywood Reporter released news that R&B singer, R. Kelly, is adapting his infamous “hip hopera,” Trapped In The Closet, for Broadway.
The singer/ songwriter has been writing ‘chapters’ for these viral video sensations since 2005. As of now, there are 23 chapters, each one more dramatic than the rest with Kelly starring as the title character, Sylvester. Earlier this year, Kelly revealed that he’s writing MORE chapters to Trapped in the Closet. His newest installments will be released this Friday on IFC and IFC.com.
When R. Kelly finally takes a break from writing new chapters to Trapped and from his “Single Ladies” tour, the artist will be adapting his shorts for the stage. No news yet on when his Broadway debut will be, but you can bet R. Kelly will be starring, when his busy schedule allows. He told fans via Gawker that he would star depending on which city the show was in, he said, “I can’t guarantee all of them, and that’s what’s being negotiated right now.” Kelly admitted it takes time to pen the new shorts because” I’m the only one in the studio writing these chapters.” No way R. Kelly, we thought you had a professional writing staff behind those Oscar worthy YouTube videos…
R. Kelly is a self-proclaimed “scientist of music” so naturally Broadway is the logical next step on his musical journey to complete world domination.
